40 of the Freshest and Funniest Tweets of the Week (June 8, 2024)

The way the language of social media has penetrated our everyday lexicon is astounding. We take it for granted that the word "tweet" has taken on a completely different meaning than it once did. One upon a midnight dreary, tweet was only the sound that a small bird would make. It was one of our few true onomatopoeias. To say it would be to invoke the whimsy of a small child learning animal sounds.

Who could have guessed that one day, the same word would take on a whole new, brutally contemporary meaning? It's a noun, a verb, something you can get canceled for, and something that could go viral (another word that has radically changed meaning since social media). I wonder what commonplace words are going to transform in the next decade or so. Maybe people will say "That's so Memebase" when they mean "That's so cool." A girl can dream.
